The Constituent Assembly of India embarked on its historic journey on December 9, 1946, meeting for the first time in New Delhi’s Constitution Hall, now known as the Central Hall of parliament House. Tasked with drafting a constitution for a free India, the Assembly completed this in two years, eleven months and seventeen days. The Constituent Assembly’s work was a profound exercise in nation-building, reflecting the diverse aspirations and values of a new, free India. Led by visionaries like Dr Rajendra Prasad, D.R. Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and countless others, the assembly labored to create a framework of governance that would endure, uniting a vast land under the rule of law and democracy. This diverse and dedicated body worked tirelessly to frame a constitution that would serve as the foundation of India’s democratic governance.
